Jiggly Wiggly Diner - MATS March Bootcamp

For Lilla Rogers March Bootcamp assignment we were instructed to create a bolt fabric design around Jell-O. At first it seemed the project was a bit silly, and not really up my alley, but the point of this class is to push myself and extend my creative thought pattern.

So after much research and jell-o drawing, I started to see a 1950's jello diner in my designs... needless, to say, the theme took control of itself! I may have gone a bit overboard with my 50's diner theme, but I don't care! It was soooo much fun!!

Here is the March gallery for our Make Art That Sells Assignment Bootcamp class. Check out the awesome work of 400+ artists challenged to create vintage jello mold-inspired designs for the bolt fabric market! - http://bootcamp.lillarogers.com/bootcamp-march-2014-gallery/

Happy 2014 everyone!

I can't believe it's 2014 already! Happy New Year everyone! We're back in the studio with tons of catching up and new year planning to do. With much gratitude, we ended 2013 with a BANG! Here's a bit of what the studio looked like just before our holiday break.

We had a very nice winter break - spent time with family, painted and put new floors in the kitchen, fixed framing issues with the barn, got the wood stove installed and started really and truly unpacking. Not relaxing, but definitely in our pj's a lot!

I have a feeling 2014 is going to be an amazing and busy year. We're welcoming my mom on board (keeping Near & Dear Designs a family business!) for admin and research. I've got feelers out for licensing and corporate commissions as well as some plans to start a second Etsy shop... hmmm... :) And, to add more joy to our life, my husband and I have plans for a new collaborative startup we hope to get going this year!

Happy New Year everyone! Wishing you all lots of love and luck in 2014.

Make Art that Sells : Part A Roundup

Well, I can honestly say that I am sad that the Make Art that Sells class is over. In just a few short weeks I learned so much about myself as an artist and how to really stretch my work as a reflection of what I knew I could always do, but never took the time. I didn't learn any new skills per se, as I went into this wanting to hone my current skills, but from Bolt Fabric to illustrating Children's Books, from Home Decor to the Gift Market, I did learn that I do have something to offer! Such a wonderfully exciting and motivating feeling!

Here is my roundup of assignments (left to right):
1. Inspiration piece - excited to start Lilla's class!
2.Bolt Fabric - the theme was mushrooms and vintage dishes
3. Home Decor - plate design using organics
4. Children's Books - Illustrate Hans Christian Andersen's The Snail and The Rose Tree
5. Gift Market - Zipper Pouch (vintage again)

(I didn't do the Wall Art week, instead I focused on creating and releasing the new Monogram Florals in the Near & Dear shop. I'd been sitting on finalizing those designs for some time, and decided it was a better use of my energy to contribute new work to the Etsy shop that week)

Here are a few lessons I took away from the class:

Lesson 1 : A community or creative group is essential to sustaining ones creativity. The community of this classroom is one of the most talented, supportive and enthusiastic group of women (and a few good men!) that one could ever hope to have in your corner. The enthusiasm and support is unlike any group of artists (all working toward the same goal mind you!) I've ever had the joy and pleasure of working beside.

Lesson 2 : Slow down. I didn't know it until now, but I pretty much lived with the theory that if I couldn't make it to sell and if it couldn't be made in an hour or two, it wasn't worth making. Lilla's class taught me to really take my time with detail, let a piece evolve and create it for me. It's kind of an ironic lesson since we only had a few short days to complete each brief, but that's a few short days more than I had been giving to my personal work in the past. To push the irony one step further, the class is called Make Art that Sells, not Make Art for Yourself. :)  However, that's the place in your heart Lilla brings you to. AND, the results are beyond what I truly thought was inside me! It makes me almost embarrassed to be associated with any work I've done up until now because I see all my work and capabilities in a whole new light!

Lesson 3 : Showing my work to other artists can be nerve wracking! It was hard to get over the "competition" thoughts even though it wasn't a competition. EVER. I found myself feeling really behind compared to other artists (jealous) and really ahead of others (confident). However, by the end of the first mini-assignment, it was clear that everyone has something to bring to the table and the journey is simply with ones self. Really. Truly. And that, my friends, is invaluable.

Lesson 4 :  Listen to what others say about your work. One of the key things I received from the folks in class was another perspective. For some a new perspective might mean, color palette, layout, typography etc. For me, a new perspective came with the descriptive words people used when commenting on my work - nostalgic, special, magical etc. These are powerful and helpful words I now feel safe in using to describe my work going forward. They also give me a feeling to design to when creating new work. If I keep those words and that perspective in mind, my new work seems to fall right in.

Lesson 5 : The pie gets bigger! There's enough work for everyone, the more work we make, the more art that gets bought, the more products manufacturers produce because one thing is for sure, consumers love to buy great art!

Needless to say, I'm very much looking forward to keeping in touch over the next few months with my classmates AND I'm signed up for Part B in October! Overflowing in goodness, I tell you. Overflowing.

Make Art that Sells : Week 3 : Children's Book Market

Week 3 with Lilla was all about the Children's Book Market. Though this seems like a very difficult market to break into, I've found the most wonderful thing is there is so much room for style and interpretation - which is beautiful!

To get us warmed up, Lilla wanted us to draw snails and work on lettering the words snail, rose and tree.  I had no idea where this was going to eventually lead us, for the warm-up I played. :)

"They" say that if you want to work in this market and you've never been commissioned to illustrate a book, a way to grow your portfolio is by taking the time to illustrate a spread from well known fairytales or fables.

After the mini-assignment, Lilla assigned us the Snail and the Rose Tree by Hans Christen Andersen. I went through many different ideas, revisions, color palettes etc. I almost ALMOST thought I wasn't going to complete the assignment. I was almost in tears. However, after reading and rereading (and rereading) the story, I found myself laughing at the irony of the ending. So, I decided to illustrate the ending and it all came together....

What is the expression? The smallest violin playing the saddest song in the world....

In the end, although I had a wonderful time designing these two pieces, I'll have to think long and hard about illustrating a children's book if I ever get asked.

Lilla Roger's Studio School : Make Art That Sells

This happened today! For weeks I've been watching the other artists enrolled in Lilla's class submitting artwork featuring Lilla's Studio School logo - see them all on facebook - and I've been mulling over ideas for this project, but unable to come up with anything that had me rushing to it. Sometimes these things take time....

However, since the classroom opened up a few days ago and I've been meeting all my wonderfully talented classmates, I've been giddy with excitement! Today, I lost hours working on this piece. Hours, I tell you. Back sore, legs numb, forgotten meal times... It was wonderful. :)

I've made my commitment, I've prepped my space and my heart is open. Now all I need to know is…
Is it Monday, yet?

Little house by Suzy Ultman for Lilla Roger's Studio.

Speaking of Homegrown : I also rearranged the studio over the last few days. With it finally being "open window" season here in Cleveland, I need to cash in on some of that!

There's something about a new chair, that just makes everything better.

I now get a wonderful breeze that comes in from the windows.

Gavin and I sit across from one other and play footsies under the desk. :)

Matting, framing, packing and shipping. All happens here.

Designs for Artscase Live Brief

Designs for Artscase : Here's the scoop

Through the ABSPD course (which wrapped-up today! YAY! I'm officially a graduate of something! :) I was introduced to this design brief for Artscase. They are looking to expand their designer collection and are currently seeking commercial masculine designs that are innovative, wide appealing and fresh. Artscase sells various gadgets such as iPad mini covers, iPhone, and Samsung phone cases. Their audience is continually searching for the hippest, fashionable accessories.

Well, let me tell you... what a process this turned out to be! For the longest time I was feeling uninspired by this project. Like seriously uninspired. I've not yet tried to do the "masculine" thing and I just wasn't sure where to start. You know how a white canvas is the most intimidating? Yeah, it was kinda like that.

Then, just the other day, I moseyed on over to my husband's side of the closet and started noticing how diverse his shirt collection is! Which got me thinking... designing for men isn't as simple as conveying masculinity (which is the concept I was hung up about) because there are so many unique styles just like there are so many unique men! So, with that in mind, I pulled together a collection inspired by my husband's closet. Each design represents a small piece of his personality. :)

I don't think I followed the brief exactly, but you'll have that when inspiration takes over!

This collection, in whole or in part, (that includes everything from the individual designs to the title and page layout of this presentation) are all copyright protected. That's right, I'm on top of it. :)

Pinwheels & Tea : Gift Wrap Collection

Up late and up early! I finished a gift wrap design brief for the The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design course I'm currently taking. I'm in the home stretch of the last module. It's a lot of information in a short time but I'm learning so much along the way!

Here is my collection : Pinwheels & Tea.

Whatcha think? Gift wrap for a housewarming gift... maybe a tea party? In some cases, this would be pretty wedding gift wrap as well... So many possibilities!!

I'd love to hear your thoughts on 1. If you would purchase this gift wrap if it were on a store shelf and 2. Who would you give a gift to in this paper?

Thanks and much love!!

My Thoughts on Thanks

I've been feeling so grateful these days. Etsy is rolling along and I'm feeling more inspired than ever!  I just want to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who supports the Near & Dear collection. Over the past 2 years you've put a roof over our heads, food on our table and kept our lights on! But most importantly, you've provided me with so much support and daily encouragement. I love hearing all your life stories and history of personal relationships. I love that you trust in my aesthetics and quality to design images that capture your most important memories. It is truly my pleasure. :)

I also want to express my gratitude to all my new friends and followers! I'm opening my heart and creativity to a career in Surface Design and I'm so excited for all the work and energy this brings to my life! I've invested a lot of time, money and trust in myself - and the Universe - through this process and I promise, I won't let you down!

So, the new plan is....

Throughout the year and beyond, I plan to transition my designs into fabric, home decor, tech and stationary products all with my new pattern designs printed on them!  I plan to seek out licensing contracts or commissions for mass-market retail designs. I plan to invest more time and trust into this process with the hopes of providing a long(er)-term, sustainable income stream for my family.

I want to reassure you, the Near & Dear collection will still be available just as it is now! No changes, just improvements!! You'll still be able to order and request custom Near & Dear designs through my Etsy shop. However as time goes on you may start to see some of my pattern designs or illustrations appear as prints in Etsy or on actual functional lifestyle products!

Please stick around through this transition and show your support. It's the encouragement that keeps us artists and designers excited and creating new work! I hope to "wow!" you all with lots of fresh, colorful and meaningful new designs!

AND as a special thank you gift I've designed the above greeting card and I'm giving 2 sets away! I'm sure you have people in your life who might like to receive a thank you. Sometimes, something as simple as a spring-y design with meaningful words, is enough to really make someone's day.

Lilla Rogers Studio School’s “Make Art That Sells”

I did the most amazing thing I could do for myself yesterday - I enrolled in Lilla Rogers Studio School’s “Make Art That Sells” e-course and I am SO crazy beside myself excited! Lilla's course is 10 solid weeks of inspiration, industry tips, design briefs and art direction. 10 solid weeks of community, support, appreciation and portfolio building.  10 solid weeks of pure creative goodness and connection.

My creative entrepreneurial soul needs this. *sigh*

I thought long and hard about the course, whether I was ready, what was holding me back and whether or not I have the time to dedicate - but in the end, I decided that this is the best investment I can make in myself, my work and the future of our family and I'm just going to go for it! Besides, I would've kicked myself if the course sold out (enrollment is limited) before I even made the decision! So, I footed the bill and let myself feel the rush of excitement!

Poor Gavin, when I get excited, I'm a one track mind. It's all I can talk about or think about right now!
He's a patient man.

Last week, I ordered Lilla's book "I Just Like to Make Things" and I'm expecting it in the mail any day now. I can't wait to start with her book and move onto the course in June! I feel like I have a lot to do in order to show up ready and open. Lots of new work coming in the next few months!!

November Desktop Calendar

Boy, October sure flew by!  I have so many updates to post - about the wedding, our "mini-moon", new designs, some DIY wedding adventures, new holiday ideas in the Etsy shop etc. - but nothing is more pressing at the moment than my November Desktop Calendar! :)

In fact, I've had 4 of you inquire and request I do this quickly as your desktops are outdated!  That just warms my heart. :)

Hurricane Sandy set us back a few days here in Cleveland, but now that power is restored and the internet is in full swing, I present to you my November Desktop Calendar.....

Thank you everyone for all your support and understanding throughout October.  We had a helluva month and I can't wait to share with you! More to come soon...

Studio Redefined

As you know, my home/workspace situation has been driving me NUTS! And with Gavin living here and working with me (more than) part-time, it was essential to redefine the studio/house setup.  You can see my previous thoughts here and here.

Anyway, we're almost done - just a few finishing touches and then some re-arranging as we grow and work in the space but all in all, not bad.  And BOY! does it feel good to have room to breathe!

Without further adieu.... I'll show you what we have completed so far....

Photo Notes:

1. That's my "Scratch and Dent" wall on the far left.  Anyone out there need a Kristin & Craig, 09.24.2011, Midland Michigan design?  Reeeaaallllyyyy cheap?  :D

2. Bottom right... hot lazy kitty.

3. Far right (peg board) - For now, we blocked off the white brick fireplace and built a work bench for Olivia. We repurposed an old vanity she had in her room by painting it white and taking the mirror off. Then Gavin picked up white peg board and a whole plethora of tools and hooks for Liv to work with.  She's a builder, maker, crafter through and through (she's been bred that way) so when Gavin and I are working here in the studio, she's got a place to create as well.  She loves it!  Score 2 points for Gavin!! (1 pt for making Liv happy and 1 pt for making Liv's momma happy!)

Photo Notes:

1. Graphite Twill slipcover and Citrine pillow cover are from FreshKnesting on Etsy. I had this (once nice, now awful, now nice again!) IKEA Tullsta chair that needed covering... like BAD!  So I contacted the owner of this shop and she did a fabulous job. Fits like a glove!

2. See that beautiful expertly hand forged mirror?  Yep, crafted by none other than Gavin himself.  I'm so lucky to be the recipient of such beautiful - and functional - pieces of art.

And there it is so far. Lots more to do in the studio and the house:

  • Buy throw rug
  • Finish organizing the "shipping department" (more pics on that later)
  • Hang all the new art I've been scooping up from my favorite independent artists (another post for another day)
  • CLEAN!
  • Sort out the final layout for the livingroom/dining room combo
  • Hang my new globe lights out in the backyard
  • Get Gavin's "city shop" up and running
  • ..... and it's coming to crunch time on Gavin's Cain Park art show, so it'll be all hands on deck in about 2 weeks to crank out and fill an entire 10x10 booth for sexy forged wrought iron. YOWZA!

But for now.... I'll just be in love with my new studio!

Art shows with a capital A

It's summer and to a couple of self-employed artists that means art shows with a capital "A". This is serious stuff. It was the great debate in my head and my heart but I decided that I won't be doing art shows this year. My Etsy shop has me busy full time and it has Gavin busy about 25-30 hours a week. I just couldn't see having the time in our summer for both of us to put together separate bodies of work for multiple shows this season. Gavin shows 3-4 times while I had 8-10 shows during the summer. So gracefully I backed out from the scene this year. I really feel it's important to support Gavin and his work to the same degree he supports Olivia and I throughout all our creative ventures as well.

For those that follow the goings around here, Gavin is one badass designer-blacksmith and I'm just so proud. We even met at an art show back in 2010. Meant to be? YES!! Anyway, his work is almost exclusively hand forged wrought iron. As a product of the Rust Belt and of greater Cleveland, few creative media could be more appropriate than iron. Having earned a degree in Studio Arts and Business Administration from Baldwin-Wallace in 2004 and completed world-renown certificate programs at the Lincoln Electric CHQ Weld School, his formal education in both Fine Art & Design and metalworking is also quintessentially Cleveland.

The products made in his studio and shop, The Designer Wrought Iron Company, are almost exclusively custom, privately commissioned wrought ironworks and range in scope from railing systems to drawer pulls and candlesticks.

Funny, I didn't realize that you can't see his face in either of these install images!!

His work has been featured in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Sun Times, and on the PBS television series “Applause”.

In case this video isn't working (blogger is playing tricks on me!) here's the link:
http://designerwroughtiron.com/movie/Gavin.swf

Gavin's next art show will be the Cain Park Arts Festival, July 13-15th in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. You can follow them here on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/CainParkArtsFestival

We are feverishly preparing for that as it's his most prominent show of the year with 150+ artists from all over the nation travelling to exhibit their work. And with Near & Dear Designs on the rise, as you can imagine, this keeps us quite busy!!
