Setting the Mood for a Farm Wedding : Our Sleepy Hollow Wedding

Our vision for the wedding was simple.... have it at home, keep it casual, support independent artists and businesses, lots of DIY, great music, home cooked food, bon fires and camping (yes, camping!)  Did you expect anything less?


Choosing a Location
Hands down, we knew exactly were this needed to be and we were hoping Papa Lehman was going to say yes. Of course he did!  They were thrilled we wanted to have the wedding at their home, even if that meant a lot of prep work for them.

So, we held the wedding at Gavin's parents farm.  You can read more here.  It was the perfect October setting complete with farm house, a few red barns, lots of room to spread out, and generations of family memories.

Keeping it Casual
They say your stationary is what sets the tone for your entire wedding.  Whether it's a formal affair with all the bells and whistles or a low-key backyard bash, it's your stationary and the wording you choose that sets the mood and lets your guests know what to expect.

Though I ended up NOT sending out formal paper invites (which shocked most people... I am a print designer after all) - we used facebook, made phone calls and directed everyone to our wedding website (designed by yours truly).

However, before the "paperless" decision was made, I couldn't help myself in the beginning and started on this design:

But in the end, it was our choice of wording and approach to inviting our guests that let them know exactly the kind of party they were all in for!  We said it like this:

------ Who's Invited? ------
All our family and friends, of course! For those already spoken for... of course you should bring your other half - or whoever, we don't judge! For those who are fabulously single... feel free to bring a date or come stag, there's bound to be a handful of other good looking singles to mingle with. And who knows... love will be in the air, after all.

------ What to wear? ------
This is a totally casual event - If you wear something other than jeans you'll be too dressed up! Heels not recommended.

------ How about kids? ------
Well yeah! Kids are totally invited! Though we'll be drinking, dancing and carrying on all night, this is still a family friendly event. After all, it's all about celebrating with our family!

------ Participation ------
We're striving to create this event as local, handmade and community focused as possible. It's important to us, both as artists and conscious citizens, that we support our fellow craftsmen, local farms, independent businesses and friends with talents.

We'd like to ask for your help and support in our efforts by graciously bringing a salad, side dish, dessert or a bottle of the good stuff to share with everyone at the celebration. Someone very wise just reminded me, food=love, and we whole heartedly agree!

------ Accommodations ------
We are HIGHLY encouraging everyone to stay and camp with us! Enjoy the party and bon fire to follow. There is no need to drive if you don't want to or simply shouldn't. We'd love to be awesome hosts and provide tents, but honestly, we can't. So bring whatever you need to crash and we'll be sure to have leftovers for breakfast.
